Weekend Recap - Michigan State, Wake Forest Lose While Others Survive Scares

November 7, 2021 by Staff

Michigan State and Wake Forest fell from the unbeaten ranks, while Alabama, Cincinnati and Ohio State all had some trouble putting away their opponents. Meanwhile, top-ranked Georgia did what the Bulldogs were supposed to do with an inferior opponent - crush them.

The Spartans were 40--29 losers at Purdue, as the Congrove Computer Rankings predicted would happen.

Meanwhile, Wake Forest pulled defeat from the jaws of victory by surrendering an 18-point, 45-27 lead at Chapel Hill, and ultimately bowing 58-55 to North Carolina. It's a similar refrain of last year's game when the Tar Heels overcame a 45-24 deficit to defeat Wake 59-53.

Alabama got way more than it bargained for from LSU, escaping with a 20-14 victory in Tuscaloosa. A sluggish performance by the Tide kept the Bayou Bengals in the game, but LSU had several opportunities in the 4th quarter to close the deal on an upset and simply didn't have enough offense to get the job done.

Cincinnati gave Tulsa a late chance to record the upset by fumbling the snap at its own 2-yard line with just over a minute left in the game, but the Golden Hurricane gave it back on a 4th-and-goal fumble just outside the goal line with 25 seconds left as the Bearcats prevailed, 28-20.

Ohio State went to Lincoln and clawed its way to a 26-17 win over Nebraska, never leading by more than 14 points and only salting the game away on a  46-yard field goal with 1:29 remaining in that game.

Georgia left nothing to chance against Missouri. After the Tigers took a 3-0 lead on their first possession, the 'Dawgs went on a 40-0 run and strolled to a 43-6 victory.

Georgia, Oklahoma, Cincinnati and UTSA are now the only remaining undefeated teams in the FBS. Just two weeks ago, there were nine unbeaten teams.

In other games, Justin Fuente should be one step closer to being fired after a lethargic 17-3 loss at Boston College sunk Virginia Tech to 4-5 and placed the team in jeopardy of missing a bowl game for a second straight season.

Just days after bidding Gary Patterson farewell after 20+ seasons, TCU downed Baylor 30-28 in another upset predicted by the computer.

Auburn traveled to Texas A&M in the only matchup of teams ranked in the top 25 by the College Football Playoff Committee, but the Aggies wore down the Tigers en route to a 20-3 win at College Station.

Oklahoma State used a strong defensive effort to subdue West Virginia 24-3 in Morgantown.

Army won a 21-14 overtime battle with Air Force in Arlington to guarantee it won't have to cough up the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, regardless of what happens in its game with Navy. The trophy goes to the winner of the round-robin competition between the three service academies and Navy has already lost to Air Force. The worst-case scenario is a 3-way tie between the programs.

Beamerball is still alive, thanks to Frank Beamer's son Shane, who has South Carolina at 5-4 in his inaugural season as head coach after the Gamecocks embarrassed Florida 40-17 to the delight of the home faithful. Shane's hall-of-fame dad, and the rest of the family, was on-hand to witness the upset.

10 teams were idle this week, including No. 2 Oklahoma. The undefeated Sooners were shockingly ranked just 8th by the playoff committee in the first reveal of their Top 25 for the 2021 season, released last Tuesday evening. As the number of beaten teams has shrunk dramatically, the committee should give a little more recognition to how difficult it is to run the table.
