NOTE: CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove is a voter for the Maxwell, Bednarik and Ray Guy awards.

Each week during the 2022 season the Maxwell Football Club will recognize outstanding performances with two weekly awards. The Maxwell Award Player of the Week will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense or special teams, and the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week will be honored for outstanding defensive play. Players selected do not have to be represented on the Maxwell or Bednarik Award watch list.

Maxwell Award Player of the Week - QB Drake Maye, North Carolina

University of North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye has been named Maxwell Award Player of the Week after propelling the Tar Heels to a late game thriller win over Appalachian State 63-61. Entering his redshirt freshman season, the 6-4.5, 220-pound quarterback went 24-35 for 352 passing yards with 4 TD, while adding 12 carries on the ground for 76 yards and a touchdown. In an article published by the Charlotte Observer, Coach Mack Brown was quoted as saying, ““When you’ve got a great quarterback, you’ve got a chance,” Brown said. “And Drake is a great quarterback, who will only get better,” and sure enough, he showed up to play on Saturday in Boone.

Bednarik Award Player of the Week - DB Joey Porter, Penn State

Penn State defensive back Joey Porter was named the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week following Thursday’s win over Purdue. The 6’2 198-pound redshirt junior starred in the week 1 matchup with 8 solo tackles, a career-high 6 pass breakups, and his first career fumble recovery. Porter’s six pass breakups set a school record and tied a Big Ten record for the most pass breakups in a single game. The six pass breakups are tied for the most in a single game for an FBS player since Houston’s William Jackson III had seven against Temple in 2015.

Ray Guy Punter of the Week - Kai Kroeger, South Carolina

The Augusta Sports Council and the Ray Guy Award are proud to announce Kai Kroeger of South Carolina as the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week for Week 1 games. Kroeger was chosen from Ray's 8 that also included Barney Amor of Penn State, Bryce Baringer of Michigan State, Ethan Duane of Old Dominon, Adam Korsak of Rutgers, Austin McNamara of Texas Tech, Peter Moore of Virginia Tech, and Tory Taylor of Iowa.

Kroeger punted 7 times during the game against Georgia State for a total of 344 yards. His gross average was 49.14 yards and finished with a net average of 46.29. Four of his punts ended up inside Georgia State's 20-yard line and he had a long punt of 79 yards.
