UFL Regular Season Ends; Playoff Semifinals This Weekend

June 3, 2024 by Staff

Each of this week's conference championship games are encore performances of regular season finales.

San Antonio will once again play at St. Louis to determine the XFL Conference representative in the UFL Championship game. The Battlehawks prevailed 13-12 to secure the honor as they finished the season with a 5-1 conference mark and a 7-3 over-all record. The Brahmas also finished 7-3 over-all, but 3-3 in the conference.

St. Louis' only conference loss came last week in an upset at Arlington.

On the USFL side of the equation, we already knew Michigan would play at Birmingham again, regardless of what the outcome was in the final regular season game. The Stallions recovered from their only loss of the season - an upset at Arlington last week - by edging the Panthers 20-19. Birmingham is now 30-4 all-time in USFL/UFL games all under head coach Skip Holtz who led the team to both USFL titles in 2022 and 2023.

The USFL and XFL merged this season, taking Birmingham, Michigan, and Memphis from the USFL, along with Arlington, Houston, San Antonio, DC and St. Louis from the XFL. To give the league 4 teams in each conference, the Houston Roughnecks were moved to the XFL Conference.

The XFL Conference was 9-7 vs the USFL Conference.

The eight teams left behind - four from each league - were the Orlando Guardians, Seattle Sea Dragons and Las Vegas Vipers from the XFL, along with the New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Star, Pittsburgh Maulers, Houston Gamblers and New Orleans Breakers from the USFL.

Saturday's game in St. Louis wasn't secured until the Brahmas missed on a 51-yard field goal that was barely tipped and hooked left with 8 seconds left, while Birmingham earned its victory when Jake Bates missed a 53-yard walk-off FG attempt wide right.

Meanwhile in Memphis on Sunday, the Showboats earned the No. 1 pick in the 2025 UFL Draft with their 19-12 win at home over Houston. Memphis was 2-0 in season bookend games vs. the Roughnecks and 0-8 against all of the other teams.

Houston finished with the league's worst record at 1-9.

Arlington won its final two games of the season to climb to 3-7.

Attendance

Home teams were 3-1 over the weekend with DC becoming the only loser. The Defenders have become know for trying to out-do the previous home crowd's beer snake, and it even has its own 'X" account. DC drew 13,080 to the final home game.

St Louis had its second-largest crowd of the year at 34,379. The Battlehawks' lowest attendance was 31,757 in week 3 (2nd home game) and the high was 40,317 for the teams' home opener in week 2. The crowd could top the 50K mark for this Sunday's 6 p.m. (Local time) playoff game on Fox.

Birmingham saw a tremendous drop-off in attendance to just 7,133 which was nearly 4,000 under its season average.

In Memphis, just 6,039 showed up. Memphis also owns the lowest attendance of any game this year with a gathering of 5,609 in week 6.

In all, the weekend's games saw a total of 60,632 fans with nearly 57% of those in St. Louis. Overall league attendance reached 512,791 mark with St. Louis accounting for 171,825 (33.5%) of that total.
