LSU and Georgia Clinch SEC Title Berths, while UNC Claims ACC Coastal

November 13, 2022 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

Brian Kelly's first season at LSU opened with a loss to Florida State on a blocked PAT in New Orleans. Now, the Bayou Bengals are headed to Atlanta to face Georgia in the SEC Championship game. Suffice it to say, no one saw that coming.

LSU was a 13-10 survivor at Arkansas on Saturday while Georgia was a 45-19 winner in the Bulldog fight at Mississippi State.

Clemson now knows it will face North Carolina in the ACC Championship game in Charlotte after the Tar Heels managed a 36-34 triumph at Wake Forest. Clemson had the Atlantic secured, even before its 31-16 win at Louisville on Saturday.

TCU reserved a spot in the Big 12 Championship game with a 17-10 win at Texas while Kansas State moved into sole possession of 2nd with a 31-3 smackdown of Baylor in Waco.

Meanwhile, the PAC-12 and B1G got a little messier.

Oregon lost 37-34 at home to Washington and saw its 23-game home winning streak, and 8-game over-all winning streak, come to an end.

In one of the last games to end on Saturday, UCLA was a stunning 34-28 loser in Pasadena at the hands of Arizona.

In the B1G, Ohio State and Michigan were both easy winners and are still on a collision course to determine the East side of the ledger when they meet in Columbus on the 26th.The Buckeyes spanked Indiana 56-14 in Columbus and the Wolverines slapped around Nebraska 34-3 in Ann Arbor.

The west side story of the B1G is quite a different matter after Illinois lost 31-24 at home to Purdue. The Illini and Boilermakers are now tied with Iowa and Minnesota at 4-3.

In the battle for the Group Of Five's automatic bid to a New Year's Six bowl game, UCF went to Tulane and knocked off the Green Wave 38-31. But  the Knights can't cash that check just yet as they now find themselves tied atop the American Conference with the Green Wave and Cincinnati with records of 8-2 over-all and 5-1 in league play. UCF does, however, own the tie-breaker over both and only needs to beat Navy and USF over the final two weeks.

- Vanderbilt ended a 26-game SEC losing streak with a 24-21 upset win at Kentucky,

- NC State was a 21-20 loser at Boston College as a 20-point favorite,

- Coastal Carolina rallied to a 26-23 win over Southern Miss without Grayson McCall at QB.

- Virginia Tech lost a 7th straight game for the first time since 1951 as Brent Pry's first season as a head coach has been an utter disaster.

- On the other hand, Mike Elko's first year at Duke is going swimmingly.  The Blue Devils beat Virginia Tech 24-7 on Saturday to improve to 7-3, and are 2nd in the ACC Coastal.

- Syracuse continued its slide with a fourth straight loss after starting 6-0.  The Orange were crushed 38-3 at home by a Florida State team that is 2nd in the ACC Atlantic.

- UTSA romped to a 51-7 win over Louisiana Tech to get to 6-0 in Conference USA as the Roadrunners look destined to repeat as hosts of the CUSA Championship game.

- Fresno State is still the MWC West leader after a 37-30 win at UNLV on Friday, while Boise State and Wyoming will meet next week in Laramie in what will likely determine the MWC Mountain. The Broncos bucked Nevada 41-3 in Reno while the Cowboys got away with a 14-13 win at Colorado State.

- Ohio and Toledo appear to be on a collision course for the MAC title game. The Bobcats won 37-21 at Miami (O) on Tuesday while the Rockets defeated Ball State 28-21 on the same night.
