September 4, 2018 by CFP Staff

Michigan State's reign at No. 1 didn't last long as Oklahoma takes over the top spot in this week's Congrove Computer Rankings while the Spartans fall to 4th. The Sooners were ranked 2nd last week.

Michigan State was a 37.19-point favorite over visiting Utah State but only managed to pull out a 7-point win (38-31). Oklahoma was a 26.58-point pick to end FAU's 10-game winning streak and won by 49 (63-14).

Ohio State moves up from 4th to 2nd after routing Oregon State, while Notre Dame climbs from 5th to 3rd with its win over Michigan.

Clemson drops from 3rd to 5th after defeating Furman, and Wisconsin rises from 8th to 6th after a 34-3 win over Western Kentucky. USC, Auburn, Stanford and Northwestern round out the top 10 with Alabama climbing from 17th to 11th.

Miami plummets from 14th to 29th after taking a 33-17 whipping at the hands of LSU in a game played at Arlington, Texas. Another ACC team, Duke, inches downward from 24th to 26th. Those are the only schools to drop from the computer's top 25.

The new entrants are LSU at 21st and Iowa State at 25th. The Cyclones benefit from having their home game against an FCS school get canceled, thereby increasing their overall strength of schedule.

This week's Top 25 contains a whopping 8 schools from the SEC and 7 from the Big Ten. There are 4 schools from Big 12, 3 from the PAC-12. and just 2 from the ACC. Notre Dame is the lone independent in the Top 25.

The highest-ranked Group of Five schools is Mountain West member Boise State at No 36. Memphis tops all American Conference teams at No. 54, Marshall is the top CUSA entrant at No. 61, Toledo leads all MAC squads at No. 64, and Appalachian State outranks all the other Sun Belt teams at No. 86.
