Weekend Recap - Weber Falls from Unbeaten Ranks, But 5 Still Perfect

October 23, 2022 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

We started the week with 6 undefeated teams in the FCS and exited with 5 still standing after No. 3 Weber State was the only one that has its record tarnished when the Wildcats fell 43-38 at No. 6 Montana State.

No. 2 Sacramento State and No. 8 Montana played a classic thriller to wrap up the weekend in style with the home Hornets prevailing in overtime, 31-24. Sacramento State is 7-0 for the first time in its history.

Meanwhile, top-ranked Jackson State methodically put down Campbell 22-14 and the Tigers are 7-0 for the first time since 1983.

No. 4 Holy Cross scored a 24-21 escape at Lafayette, despite being out-gained 329-181. Matthew Sluka's 16-yard TD pass to Justin Shorter with 4 minutes remaining provided the final score as Lafayette's final two drives ended in an interception and a turnover on downs. The Crusaders are 7-0 for the first time since 1991 when they ran the table (11-0) and finished the season on a 20-game winning streak that would end at the start of the following season after head coach Mark Duffner left to coach Maryland.

No. 9 Princeton easily passed its test on Friday, expelling Harvard 37-10 in Cambridge and improving to 6-0. They need one more win to tie the 7-0 starts of 2021 and 2019 when they subsequently lost each time to Dartmouth in their bid to get to 8-0. The loss to the Big Green in 2019 came at Yankee Stadium and ended a 17-game winning streak after the 2018 team was a perfect 10-0.  Princeton hosts Cornell next week, and Dartmouth on November 5.

Penn, ranked 14th, was a 20-13 winner at home over Yale. The Quakers are 6-0 for the first time since the undefeated season of 2003 (10-0). Penn ran off 17 straight wins from the middle of the 2002 season through the opening game of 2004.

Other Games

With 124th-ranked LIU coming to town, No. 126 Wagner had a great opportunity to exorcise some demons from its football program, and the Seahawks did just that with a 37-26 win over the Sharks. The victory ended current FCS-longest losing streaks of 26 games over-all, 16 conference games, and 12 home games. Wagner will now look to its next game to halt the current FCS longest road losing streak at 17 when the Seahawks visits winless Central Connecticut State.

A week after a huge 23-21 win at North Dakota State, No. 6 South Dakota State traveled to to North Dakota for a 49-35 victory. It didn't come easy as the Fighting Hawks scored TD's on their first two drives for a 14-0 lead, and despite giving up a pick-6 on their next possession, they still led 21-14 at halftime. The Jackrabitts came out on fire in the second half with TD's on their first 3 possessions for a 35-21 and kept the home team at bay for the rest of the contest.

No. 13 Chattanooga took down 7th-ranked Mercer in a key SoCon battle at home, while Samford outscored ETSU 55-45 in Johnson City. The Mocs, Bears and Bulldogs entered the weekend as the only teams with unblemished conference marks.

In games involving other highly-ranked teams, No. 10 Incarnate Word treated NAIA Faulkner to a 70-0 baptism, while 11th-ranked North Dakota State was among 14 idle FCS teams.
