This Week's FCS Slate Features Several Top 25 Matchups

October 25, 2022 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

A 61-game schedule in the FCS kicks off on Friday with the Ivy League matchup of Yale at Columbia. The Bulldogs opened as a 2.5-point favorite, but the Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com has the homestanding Lions getting a 2.17-point edge  It's a bit surprising that this game is expected to be so close, given that Columbia (0-3, 3-3) is winless in the Ivy League after winning all three of its non-conference games. Yale (5-2, 2-1) looks to rebound from a 20-13 setback at Penn for its first conference loss of the year

Wagner ended three of the FCS's longest losing futility streaks with last week's 37-26 win over LIU.The Seahawks had lost 26 over-all, 16 conference games and 12 home contest. However, they are still tied with Morgan State for the longest road losing streak in the FCS at 17 games. They visit winless (0-7) Central Connecticut State on Saturday, but are somewhat surprising computer underdogs by 6.30 points. Incidentally, Morgan State is a 9.08-point dog at MEAC favorite South Carolina State which has won 13 straight conference games.

Eleven teams have a bye week, including Montana State and New Hampshire. The Bobcats are 5th in the computer rankings and 3rd in the FCS Stats Perform Poll. UNH is only ranked 42nd by the compute rankings, but 19th by the pollsters.

Three schools have games outside the FCS as Robert Morris heads to FBS Appalachian State. You can head to hotslots.io for some hot winning action of your own. Meanwhile, Lindenwood welcomes D2 William Jewell, and Texas Southern hosts D2 Lincoln of Oakland, California.

Lincoln is a school which was founded in 1919 in San Francisco and moved to Oakland on 1999. It has 573 students and didn't have an athletics program until last year. The Oaklanders are playing an 11-game schedule, all on the road, with a mix of FCS, D2 and lower-level schools. They are 1-7, thus far, with a lone win of 70-0 two weeks ago over the D3 Hilbert College Hawks at Hamburg, NY. Their losses have all been by at least 32 points. In addition to that game in New York, their schedule has taken them to Florida, Oregon, Michigan, and Minnesota. This is the Oaklanders second game in Texas this year as they previously served as season-opening prey for Texas A&M-Commerce. Their inaugural team went 2-8 a year ago with wins over a pair of NAIA teams, Faulkner University of Montgomery, Alabama and Warner University of Lake Wales, Florida.

Undefeated FCS Teams

Weber State fell from this list with this past Saturday's 43-38 loss at Montana State, reducing the number of undefeated teams to five. Here are those five remaining teams and a look at this week's games.

No. 1 Sacramento State (7-0, 4-0 Big Sky) - The Hornets are 7-0 for the first time in school history and achieve their first No. 1 ranking from the computer after turning back Montana 31-24 in overtime. Sacramento State will try to further impress the pollsters, who voted the Hornets 2nd in the FCS Stats Perform Poll, when they host a No. 22 Idaho team that is 5-2 over-all, but 4-0 in conference play and 5-0 against FCS foes. The Vandals knocked off Montana 30-23 two weeks ago, and routed Portland State 56-21 in their last outing. The computer has Sacramento State by 12.76 and the Hornets opened as 12.5-point favorites in the sportsbooks. Sacramento State and Idaho share the Big Sky Conference lead, along with Montana State (7-1, 5-0).

No. 2 Jackson State  (7-0, 3-0 SWAC) - The Tigers were 22-14 winners over non-conference foe Campbell past Saturday, but fell out of first in a tight race in the Congrove Computer Rankings. This week, Deion Sanders' squad gets back into SWAC action when his team hosts Southern. Jackson State opened as a 10.5-point favorite and the computer stretches that margin to 14.78. Deion's son, Shedeur, ranks 10th in pass efficiency with 23 TD's and just 5 INT's. He has completed 73.2% of his throws to rank 4th in that category, and he also ranks 4th in Total Offense.

No. 4 Holy Cross (7-0, 3-0 Patriot) - The Crusaders squeaked out a 24-21 win at Lafayette after entering the game as 24.5-point favorites and a 19.03-point computer choice. Devin Cross blocked a punt for a fourth straight game and returned it 14 yards for a score late in the first half. Haskins also preserved the win when he intercepted a Lafayette pass at the Leopard's 15 in the final minutes. It won't be easy to pick up another win this week as No. 21 Fordham (6-1, 2-0) brings a high-powered offense to Worcester. The Rams rank 2nd in scoring at 49.1 ppg and first in total offense with a ridiculous 621 yards ppg. However, they are 115th in total defense. Holy Cross ranks 27th in total offense and 16th in total defense. The 15.5-point opening line and the computer's projected 11.95-point margin both seem too high.

No. 6 Princeton (6-0, 3-0 Ivy League) - The Tigers rose from 9th to 6th in the Congrove Computer Rankings after Saturday's impressive 37-10 win at a Harvard team that was 4-1 over-all, and 2-0 in the Ivy League, entering that game. Princeton is now tied with Penn atop the conference standings. Princeton turns its attention to Cornell which improved to 4-2 over-all and 1-2 in the conference with its 24-21 win at Brown. The Tigers opened as 21.5-point favorites while the Congrove Computer Rankings give them a 21.38-point edge. Princeton leads the series 64-37-2 after winning the last 3 by a cumulative 121-23.

No. 15 Penn (6-0, 3-0 Ivy League) - The Quakers were 4.02-point favorites at home over Yale this past Saturday and won 20-13, but slipped one spot in the computer rankings. This week, Penn visits Brown (2-4, 0-3) as 11.5-point favorites and a 7.67-point computer choice.

Other Top Games

No. 7 Incarnate Word is a 13.76-point computer pick at a dangerous Texas A&M-Commerce team that is 5-2 over-all and 3-0 in the Southland. UIW trails Texas A&M-Commerce and Northwestern State (LA) by a half-game.

No. 8 Weber State looks to rebound from its first loss of the season at Montana State when it hosts No. 11 Montana on Saturday as a 4.81-point computer pick and a 3.5-point opening favorite by the oddsmakers.

No. 10 Chattanooga is a 2.10-point computer underdog at No. 21 Furman, but opened as a 2.5-point betting favorite.

No. 14 William & Mary hosts No. 23 Rhode Island in a key CAA clash with the Tribe opening as a 7.5-point favorite. The computer cuts that margin in half at 3.82 points.

No. 16 Delaware opened as a 3.5-point favorite at Elon and only gets a 2.38-point edge from the computer. The Phoenix are ranked 49th after consecutive road losses to Rhode Island and New Hampshire. The Phoenix had worked working their way up to No. 21 with wins over Richmond and William & Mary.

No. 17 Austin Peay hosts No. 24 Jacksonville State. The Governors enter this game off a bye week while the Gamecocks will be looking tom recover from a 31-14 loss at home to SE Louisiana. Austin Peay is a 7.67-point computer pick and opened as a 5.5-point favorite.

FCS vs. FBS

There will be 119 FBS vs. FCS matchups this season with App State, Army and Marshall each playing two such games, and 116 other FBS schools playing one apiece.

Only one of the season's remaining 6 FBS games against FCS schools takes place this week with Appalachian State entertaining a Robert Morris program that is 0-3 in such contests. App State is 7-1 vs. FCS schools since moving back into 1-A football (FBS) in 2014 with the lone loss occurring in 2014 to Liberty, 55-48, four years before the Flames moved up. The FBS schools have dominated their FCS brethren this season, as usual, by winning 105 of the 113 games played to date.

Looking forward, Lamar visits New Mexico State on November 12, and the final FBS-FCS matchups occur on November 19 with Austin Peay at Alabama, Utah Tech at BYU, ETSU at Mississippi State, and North Alabama at Memphis.

The FBS is 105-8 vs. the FCS this year, and 1,679-148 (.919) since we began tracking this in 2003.
