Ohio State takes over top spot of Super 16 Poll; Longhorns drop to 7th

September 2, 2025 by FootballFoundation.org, CollegeFootballPoll.com staff

Ohio State received 44 of 56 first place votes and climbed one spot to No. 1 by virtue of its 14-7 win over Texas at home. The top ranking is the first in the regular season for the Buckeyes since November 1, 2015. The polling ends after the regular season conference championship games.

The Longhorns fell from the No. 1 ranking to No. 7 after the loss in Columbus, and Alabama is left out of the poll for the first time ever after a 14-point loss at Florida State. It marks the end of a 151-week run for the Crimson Tide that dates back to the very first Super 16 poll at the start of the 2014 season. Ohio State's 149 consecutive weeks is now the longest active appearance streak.

CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove has been on the Super 16 voting panel since the September 24, 2017 poll. He is one of the 44 voters who put the Buckeyes at the top of this week's poll.

Penn State advanced one spot to No. 2 after a 35-point victory at home against Nevada. The ranking is the highest for the Nittany Lions since claiming the No. 2 spot on October 22, 2017.

LSU moved six spots to No. 3 after a 17-10 road win at Clemson, marking the highest ranking for the Tigers since being ranked No. 1 on December 8, 2019.

Georgia remained No. 4 after a 45-7 win at home against Marshall.

Ole Miss and Tennessee also fell out of the poll despite winning in Week 1.

Florida, Florida State and Oklahoma moved into the poll after home victories in Week 1.

Miami (FL), Florida and Florida State are ranked in the poll during the same week for the first time in history, claiming Nos. 5, 10 and 15 spots respectively.

Tennessee was left out of the top 16 after being ranked 16th in the Super 16 Preseason Poll. Ole Miss is also absent from this poll after being ranked 15th in the preseason edition. The Rebels and Vols were replaced by Florida and Oklahoma.

The SEC leads all conferences with 6 teams in this week's poll, followed by the B1G (5) and the ACC (3), while the Big 12 and the Independents have 1 apiece.

The first regular season poll will be released on Tuesday, September 2 (to account for Labor Day games), and the final poll will be released Sunday, December 7.
