NFL: Can Washington keep the momentum going in 2025?

July 23, 2025 by CollegeFootballPoll.com staff

The 2024 season was unexpectedly spectacular for the Washington Commanders who had managed to make just four Wild Card playoff appearances since 2007 and lost all of those. Last year saw the squad go 12-5 overall and finish second to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East, before going on the road to topple Tampa Bay 23-20 in the Wild Card round and stun Detroit 45-31 in the divisional round. They were subsequently rolled in Philadelphia, 55-23, in the NFC Championship game.

It was quite the turnaround from a 4-13 campaign 2023 under head coach Ron Rivera. The club hadn't enjoyed a winning season since 2016 when they were 8-7-1 and missed the playoffs. Their best mark in the previous 32 seasons was a 14-2 record in 1991 when they went on to win beat the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI

Aside from all of the administrative changes, Washington hit the jackpot with the selection of quarterback Jayden Daniels out of LSU (transfer from Arizona State) with the second over-all pick of the 2024 draft in April in Detroit. Another quarterback, Caleb Williams of USC, was the first pick in that draft by the Chicago Bears who only managed to go 5-12. The teams met once in 2024 on October 27. Daniels and Washington won the home contest, 18-15, on a 52-yard Hail Mary pass to Noah Brown. But that play will also be remembered for the behavior of Chicago DB Tyrique Stevenson, who was taunting Commanders fans as the play began.

Daniels went on to be named the Rookie of the Year as threw for 3,568 yards and 25 TD's and 9 INT's in the regular season while adding 891 yards and 6 scores on the ground. He then threw for 822 yards in the postseason with 5 TD's and rushed for 135 with one more score.

Philadelphia remains the team to beat in 2025, but the Commanders have the 6th-best Super Bowl-winning odds at FanDuel.com. Interestingly, the Washington over/under win total is set at just 9.5.

General Manager: Adam Peters (2024)
Head Coach: Dan Quinn (2024)
Offensive Coordinator: Dan Pitcher (2024)
Defensive Coordinator: Joe Whitt, Jr. (2024)

The new brain trust of the Washington Commanders came together in rather quick succession as Adam Peters replaced Martin Mayhew as General Manager on January 15 of 2024. (Mayhew was retained as a senior personnel executive before retiring in February of this year). Peters previously served as the assistant to John Lynch with San Francisco from 2021-2023 after originally being hired in 2017 as the VP of player personnel.

Dan Quinn became the head coach on February 3, 2024. Two days later, Kliff Kingsbury was hired as the offensive coordinator while Joe Whiit, Jr. was named the defensive coordinator. It is Whiit's first job a coordinator, and the first OC role in the NFL for Kingsbury who did serve as assistant OC with the Houston Texans in 2011 before becoming the OC at Texas A&M in 2012 and the head coach of Texas Tech from 2013-2018. Then, from 2019-2023, Kingsbury was the HC of the Arizona Cardinals. He was 35-40 with the Red Raiders, where he was the staring QB for 43 games from 1999-2002 and threw for over 12,000 yards. As the Cardinals' head coach, his teams were 28-37-1.

Quinn had been a well-traveled defensive coach since 1994, the year after he finished school at Salisbury where he found success at defensive end after beginning as a linebacker. He was also a track star in shot put, discuss and hammer, and was elected to Salisbury's hall of fame in 2005, according to information found at Wikipedia.

Whitt, Jr. was a homegrown Auburn player (wide receiver) who began as a walk-on before earning his scholarship and the Tigers also gave his start in coaching as a student assistant after he stopped playing due to injuries.
