A strong opening weekend of college football saw top ten battles between No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Ohio State, No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 10 Miami, and No. 6 Clemson and No. 9 LSU. It delivered victories by Ohio State, Miami and LSU, as well as upsets of No. 8 by unranked Florida State, and No. 25 Boise State by unranked South Florida.
And it all started with a farewell salute to ESPN GameDay's Lee Corso.
So what does Week 2 have in-store?
On the surface, it simply doesn't compare as the only head-to-head Top 25 matchup is No. 13 Michigan at No. 24 Oklahoma. It will be just their second meeting in history after the Sooners downed Big Blue 14-6 in the January 1, 1976 Orange Bowl to win the National Title from pollsters.
This one has freshman QB Bryce Underwood leading the Wolverine offense while the Sooners have Washington State senior transfer John Matter.
Both QB's played well in what amounts to exhibition games in their respective opener and both heavy favorites failed to cover the spread.
Underwood was 21-of-31 for 251 yards and a TD in a 34-17 win over New Mexico in the Big House where Michigan was a 34.5-point favorite.
Mateer led a 35-3 win over Illinois State (FCS) by completing 30-of-37 for 392 yards with 3 TD's and 1 INT after his 7-yard run produced the opening score of the game. The 32-point win came up shy of the 40 points that would have been needed to cover the 39.5-point spread,
This long-overdue redux obviously doesn't have a national championship directly on the line. For that matter, Michigan only has the 4th-best conference championship odds in the Big Ten, and Oklahoma is tied with Florida for 8th-best in the SEC.
It's also not a 1-2 matchup like Texas-Ohio State this past weekend.
But it is certainly similar in major marquee name power. Texas is 5th in all-time wins with 961 while Ohio State is 3rd with 991. The Longhorns are 7th in career win percentage (70.32) and the Buckeyes are 2nd (73.79). Michigan has the most wins in all of major college football with 1,013, and Oklahoma is 6th on that list with 952. The Wolverines are 4th in all-time win percentage (74.28) and the Sooners are 6th (72.32).
As of Wednesday evening, Oklahoma is a 5.5-point favorite over Michigan while the Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com give the Sooners a 7.38-point edge.
Iowa at Iowa State: The Cy-Hawk rivalry has Iowa State by 2.5 over Iowa which, if it happens, would end a 6-game home losing streak in the series for the Cyclones. Neither team has won this rivalry game on its own field since 2019 - a streak of 5 games.
Georgia Southern at Southern California: Former USC head coach Clay Helton returns to Los Angeles with his Georgia Southern football team in tow to face the Trojans. Helton was 46-24 before getting canned on September 13, 2021. By November 2, he was back in business as the head coach at Georgia Southern. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Eagles are staying in Oxnard, California at the training complex of the Dallas Cowboys after falling 42-14 at Fresno State on Saturday.
Vanderbilt at Virginia Tech: Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia scored on a 4-yard TD run in overtime for a 34-27 win over Virginia Tech in Nashville at the start of the 2024 season. Oklahoma State at Oregon: The Cowboys were 27-7 winners in week over UT-Martin while Oregon thumped then-FCS No. 2 Montana State 59-13. In the not-too-distant past, this would have been a Top 25 showdown. Now, it appears to be a setup of another Oregon runaway as the Ducks are favored by 27.5 and get a computer margin of 42.24. Ouch. Oregon won the only previous meeting, 42-31, in a back-and-forth battle in the 2008 Holiday Bowl with Dez Bryant catching 13 balls for 167 yards in a losing effort for Oklahoma State.
Louisiana-Monroe at Alabama: Nick Saban famously lost at home to the Warhawks in his first season at 'Bama in 2007 when the Tide went 7-6. He would lose just three more times to unranked teams after that and never again at home. Kalen DeBoer is 5-4 vs. unranked teams, but 4-0 at home. For the record, Saban and Alabama outscored ULM 63-7 (2022) and 34-0 (2015) in the two meetings after the upset.
Arizona State at Mississippi State: These teams met for the first time in 2024 with the Sun Devils winning 30-23 at home on September 7 as a 6.5-point favorite. ASU has the same spread this week as the visitor.
Illinois at Duke: The Illini are a 2.5-point road favorite in the first meeting of these teams since 1965 and just the third all-time.
Ole Miss at Kentucky: It's the first meeting of two SEC teams this season, and the only one this week. The Rebels are10-1/2-point road favorites after falling 20-17 in Oxford last year on September 28 to snap a 3-game losing streak in a series that Ole Miss leads with a 30-15-1 record.
Virginia at NC State: This is the first meeting of two ACC teams this season, and the only one this week, but it's not an official conference game. The Wolfpack have won 3 straight over the Cavaliers and are favored by 2.5 to make it four in-a-row. NC State leads the series 37-22-1.
