The Aaron Rodgers era with the New York Jets is over as he's moved on to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In New York, he spent a year recovering from an Achilles rupture suffered on his opening series of the season, and then actually returned in 2024 to post solid numbers of 3,897 yards passing, a 63% completion percentage and a 28-11 TD to INT ratio. The decision by the Jets to not continue riding the arm of Rodgers was as much a matter of future salary cap concerns as anything else.
Now, Rodgers is off to another team that has been an enigma at the QB position since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger after the 2021 season. Kenny Pickett (12) and Mitchell Trubisky (5) took the snaps in 2022. Pickett again was the primary starter in 2023 with another 12 starts while Trubisky had 2 and Mason Rudolph was called on 3 times. Last year, the attention turned to newly acquired Russell Wilson and Justin Fields with Wilson starting 11 games and Fields 6.
Rodgers' deal with Pittsburgh is for a single year and could be worth up to $19.5 million with incentives and $10 million guaranteed. His signing completed a swap of QB's between the two clubs. Fields had already left the Steel City and signed with the Jets in March for $40 million over two years with $30 million in guarantees. Veteran Tyrod Taylor remains with the Jets as the primary backup.
The New York Jets are -160 to go over 5.5 wins and -210 to go under 7.5 wins, so the oddsmakers and the action by bettors say this team will miss the playoffs once again in 2025. The Jets are a division worst +1600 to win the AFC East.
The Jets haven't made the playoffs since 2010, despite a 10-6 mark in 2015, and are currently riding a 9-year streak of losing records for a combined mark of 46-102 from 2016-present.
In fact, that 10-6 mark in 2015 is the franchise's only winning record since the 2010 team advanced to the AFC Championship and lost 24-19 to the Roethlisberger-led Steelers. Mark Sanchez started every game that season for the Jets.
The 5-12 record in 2024 included an 0-5 mark against the NFC. Robert Saleh was fired as head coach after 5 games produced a 2-3 start. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich accepted the interim role for the remainder of the season and scattered 3 wins among the final 9 games after starting 0-3. One of his first moves was strip OC Nathaniel Hackett of his play-calling duties. General Manager Joe Douglas was canned in October when the team was 3-8. Douglas began his stint in 2019 when he inked a six-year deal and was in the final year of his contract. His successor is Darren Mougey who comes over from Denver where he had spent his entire administrative career (2012-2024).
Detroit DC Aaron Glenn (2021-2024), a 15-year NFL veteran as a defensive back (1994-2008) is the new head coach in the Big Apple. Glenn began his pro playing career with the Jets after being selected with the 12th overall pick in 1994 out of Texas A&M. Glenn brought Tanner Engstrand, Detroit's passing coordinator, with him. He had been with the Lions since 2020 and this is just his second NFL team.
Steve Wilks is the new defensive coordinator, a position he last held with the San Francisco 49ers two years ago. Wilks was the replacement for Bruce Arians as head coach when the latter left the Arizona Cardinals after the 2017 season. Wilks lasted one year after going a league-worst 3-13. He later was the interim HC for Carolina when Matt Rhule was fired after five games of the 2022 season. Wilks guided the Panthers to a 6-6 mark the rest of the season.
Engstrand and Mougey both attended San Diego State.

The 2025 schedule for the Jets is ranked in the middle of the pack, facing all of the NFC South teams (Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Carolina, New Orleans) that combined to go 28-40 in 2024 with the Panthers and Saints each going 5-12. At the other end of that spectrum, they get the AFC North squads (Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh) that were a cumulative 34-34 with the Browns (3-14) dragging down that record while the other three were 31-20.
We can expect to see Fields (Jets) and Rodgers (Steelers) both start for their respective clubs in the season-opener on September 7 when Pittsburgh invades MetLife Stadium.
