American Conference 2025 football schedules

May 9, 2025 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff, and theamerican.org

The American Athletic Conference has a 111-game football schedule in 2025, including a 56-game conference slate.  out of conference, league teams will have seven games against schools that were ranked in the top 25 of the final Associated Press poll last year, including four games against teams that reached the College Football Playoff

Army won the 2024 AAC championship in its first season in the conference. The Black Knights will host FCS member Tarleton State in the season opener on Labor Day weekend with that contest slated for Friday, August 29. Army will then travel to Kansas State the following week and open its league slate on September 20 at home versus North Texas after a bye week. They will also skip play the weekends of October 25 and December 6. Army was 12-2 overall and 8-0 in regular season AAC play a year ago.

Tulane, the 2024 runner-up with a conference mark of 7-1 and an over-all record of 9-5, opens August 29 at home versus Northwestern. The challenging slate also features a September 13 game at home versus Duke, followed by a September 20 trek to Oxford to tackle Ole Miss.

Some other intriguing contests include USF at Florida and Miami in weeks two and three, while Temple has a home game against Oklahoma in week 3 before heading to Georgia Tech the following week. Meanwhile, East Carolina draws BYU to Greenville, Memphis will host Arkansas in week 4, North Texas entertains Washington State in week 3, and UTSA opens at Texas A&M on August 30.

There are several new head coaches in the American Conference in 2025.

Tim Albin moves from Ohio University to Charlotte, and Blake Harrell gets his first official season as head coach at East Carolina. Harrell took over as interim HC after the Pirates opened 3-4 under Mike Houston. He led the team to four straight victories before the 'interim' tag was dropped, after which the Pirates split their last two games with a season-ending loss to Navy and a Military Bowl victory over NC State.

Florida Atlantic is giving 33-year-old Zach Kittley his first head coaching gig, replacing Tom Herman who just couldn't get things going in the right direction for the Owls.

The FCS was a feeder of new head coaches in the American Conference. Rice took Scott Abell from FCS member Davidson, Temple lured KC Keeler away from Sam Houston, and Tulsa nabbed Tre Lamb from ETSU.

UCF opted to go the deja vu route, hoping Scott Frost 2.0 will be as good as Scott Frost 1.0.

Teams from The American will play eight games against opponents from the Sun Belt, seven against the SEC, five against the ACC, four each against the Big 12 and Mountain West, three against the MAC and two each against the Big Ten and Conference USA. American teams will additionally face Notre Dame, Washington State and Oregon State among others.

The non-conference ledger includes a combined six home games for American teams against opponents from the ACC, Big Ten and SEC.

In conference play, 47 of the 56 league games will feature at least one team that played in Bowl Season last year.

Each of the 14 teams in The American will play eight conference games in 2025. The top two teams in the final single-division regular-season standings will meet in the American Athletic Conference Football Championship, which will be played either Friday, December 5, or Saturday, December 6.

Some highlights of the 2025 schedule include:

  • A compelling slate of 11 prime time conference games between 9/ 18 and 11/7 that will be on ESPN platforms. The series begins with Rice at Charlotte on Thursday, September 18. The American will have a conference game in prime time in eight consecutive weeks of the 2025 season.
  • A series of games available exclusively on ESPN+, the leading direct-to-consumer sports streaming service which has grown to more than 24.9 million subscribers.
  • A flexible Week 14 schedule to close the regular season. Navy will visit Memphis either on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday. Additionally, the Army-UTSA and Temple-North Texas games will be played either on Black Friday or the following day. Those selections will be made by October. 13.
  • The American Athletic Conference Football Championship, which has been broadcast on ABC in each of the last 10 years, is scheduled for Friday, December 5 or Saturday, December 6.

The American Athletic Conference enjoyed a successful 2024 season in its first year of its current 14-team configuration. The American sent eight teams to Bowl Season and captured the Bowl Challenge Cup by virtue of a 6-2 postseason record. Teams from The American scored bowl wins against opponents from the SEC, Big 12, ACC, Mountain West, Sun Belt and Conference USA. The American was one of only five leagues (joining the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC) to have three teams finish with 10 wins last season.

Kickoff times and television designations for the first three weeks of the season, as well as the season-long weeknight games, will be finalized by June 1. The rest of the schedule will fall under the customary 12-day and six-day selection processes. All dates announced today are subject to change.
