An
88-yard fumble return with 10:01 left in the game broke a 10-10
tie and Penn State went on to a 20-10 Outback Bowl win over Tennessee.
The Nittany Lions' Tony Hunt ran for 157 yards, his eighth game
this season of at least 130 yards. Anthony Morelli was 14-of-25
for 198 yards and a touchdown to Andrew Quarless. Kevin Kelly,
who missed on kicks from 54 and 50 yards when was the score was
tied 10-10, added a 22-yarder with 3:29 left in the game. He
also made a 34-yard field goal early in the second quarter to
tie the game at 3-3.
Joe Paterno, who turned 80 on December 21, coached from the booth
as he recovers from the broken leg he suffered when he was hit
on the sideline at Wisconsin on November 4.
It was Penn State's 22nd win in 33 bowl appearances under Paterno.
Tennessee had three turnovers, but none more costly than Arian
Foster's fumble at the Nittany Lion 12-yard line early in the
fourth quarter. Tony Davis scooped it up and raced down the sideline
for the game-changing score.
Foster's fumble in the second quarter also set up Penn State's
first field goal.
Erik Ainge was 25-of-37 for 267 yards, 0 TD's and 1 INT, but
star receiver Robert Meachem was kept quite with just 3 receptions
for 27 yards.
Penn State is now 3-0 in the Outback Bowl and Paterno is 16-6
in New Year's Day games. Tennessee is just 3-6 in its last nine
bowl games. |
