North Texas broke open a 14-7 game in the 4th quarter to drop UNLV 36-14 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on New Year's Day.

Derek Thompson threw a TD pass and Brelan Chancellor had 2 rushing scores in the final quarter.

It was the first-ever bowl loss for the Rebels (0-4) while the Mean Green secured their first bowl win since 2002 in their first trip back to the postseason since 2004.

North Texas (9-4) was a member of the Sun Belt until migrating to Conference USA this year and wound up with its best record since 2003 (9-3). The program hadn't posted a winning season since 2004 (7-5) and won a total of 8 games from 2007-2010.

UNLV hadn't made a bowl appearance, or even had a winning season, since 2000.

The Congrove Computer Rankings projected North Texas to win by 8.13.
