Huskies End Season On 4-game Winning Streak
by CFP Staff
January 2, 2010
Andre Dixon rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown as UConn won a defensive battle in the PapaJohns.com Bowl, defeating favored South Carolina 20-7.
Connecticut ended the season on a 4-game winning streak, spawned by an overtime upset victory at Notre Dame. After an October 18 stabbing incident that took the life of RB Jasper Howard, the Huskies lost 3 straight games by a combined 10 points. Their five total season losses were by a combined 15 points.
South Carolina concluded its season with losses in 4 of its last 5 games, and 5 of its last 7.
The Huskies sacked Gamecocks' QB Stephen Garcia 4 times and held him to 129 yards passing and 56 rushing. He finished 16-of-38 throwing but had several passes that were dropped. But it was also Garcia's fumble late in the 3rd quarter that set up Dixon's second touchdown run at the start of the fourth.
Four different Big East teams have won this bowl game in its four years of existence.
Connecticut improved to 3-1 in bowl games while South Carolina fell to 4-11. |
