Lane Kiffin is in his first season at Tennessee and in his third season overall with a record of 12-20 (.375). The Volunteers’ offensive coordinator is Jim Chaney and Monte Kiffin serves as the defensive coordinator.
Frank Beamer is in his 23rd season at Virginia Tech with a record of 186-92-2 (.668) and in his 29th season overall with a record of 228-115-4 (.663). The Hokies’ offensive coordinator is Bryan Stinespring and the defensive coordinator is Bud Foster.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN TENNESSEE HAS THE BALL
OT Chris Scott started all 12 games for the Vols and did not allow a sack of quarterback Jonathan Crompton in more than 700 snaps. He has started a team-high 38-straight games entering UT's Chick-fil-A Bowl showdown with Virginia Tech on Dec. 31.
Tennessee RB Montario Hardesty ranked third in the SEC in rushing at 108.8 yards per game and scored 12 touchdowns. His season total of 1,308 rushing yards is fifth-best total in school history and 156 yards shy of the school record held by Travis Henry.
Virginia Tech LB Cody Grimm is a CFP All-American. The former walk-on from Fairfax had 99 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks while anchoring the Hokies' defense. He earned first-team All-ACC honors last week.
Barquell Rivers is second on the team with 94 tackles, including 4.5 for loss.
Rashad Carmichael leads the secondary with five interceptions this season. Nekos Brown and Jason Worilds both bring 4.5 sacks into the game.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN VIRGINIA TECH HAS THE BALL
Tennessee DB Eric Berry is a CFP and FWAA All-American, and winner of the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award winner. He enters the Chick-fil-A Bowl in his home city of Atlanta second on the Tennessee team and third among SEC defensive backs with 83 tackles. He leads the team with 18 defensive big plays, which includes seven pass breakups, six tackles for loss (for minus-15 yards), two fumble returns (for 48 yards), two interceptions (for seven yards) and a forced fumble.
DT Dan Williams wrapped his Tennessee career with a 61-tackle season, a career high and the fourth most by an interior lineman at Tennessee since 1990. He also led the Vols in quarterback hurries with nine and tied for the team lead with 8.5 tackles for loss.
Tennessee LB Rico McCoy led the team and finished third in the conference with a career-high 112 tackles. He also led the league and ranked sixth nationally with five forced fumbles.
Virginia Tech RB Ryan Williams is a CFP All-American. The redshirt freshman from Manassas, Va., leads the ACC in rushing yards and touchdowns. He has rushed for 1,538 yards and has scored 20 touchdowns. His current total is the eighth highest by a freshman in NCAA history.
Quarterback Tyrod Taylor adds 344 yards rushing. Taylor was 126-226 passing on the year for 2,102 yards, 13 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
Virginia Tech's leading receiver is Jarrett Boykin, who had 715 yards and five touchdowns.
Tennessee's David Oku averages 26 yards per kickoff return.
Daniel Lincoln is 10-16 on field goals this season with a long of 49. He only has one miss under 40 yards and has had three blocked.
Chad Cunningham averages 42 yards per punt, good enough for sixth in the SEC. He has placed 11 inside the 20 yard line.
Virginia Tech's Brent Bowden, a redshirt senior from Centreville, Va., leads the lead and is 13th nationally with an average of 43.9 yards per kick.
PK Matt Waldron joins Grimm as former walk-ons to make the first team this year. The senior from Oakfield, N.Y., leads the ACC in kick scoring and is a perfect 44-for-44 on PATs and 17-for-20 on field goals.
Both VT kickers were first team All-ACC in 2009.

Tennessee has played five times previously in the Atlanta bowl game... The Vols made appearances in the Peach Bowl in 1982 vs. Iowa and 1988 vs. Indiana... UT's Chick-fil-A Bowl appearances were in 2002 vs. Maryland and 2004 vs. Clemson... Tennessee is 1-3 in those games with the lone victory coming 27-22 over the Hoosiers in 1988... This is Tennessee's 48th overall bowl appearance, which is tied for third among NCAA schools... The Vols have an all-time mark of 25-22, with the 25 wins ranking fourth in all of college football.
This will be the second time this season for the Hokies to play in the Georgia Dome, as they opened the season versus Alabama... Virginia Tech is 1-1 in previous bowl appearances in Atlanta... The Hokies won the 1986 Peach Bowl 25-24 over N.C. State, and lost the 2006 Chick-fil-A Bowl 31-24 to Georgia when they blew a 21-3 halftime lead... Virginia Tech has the 3rd-longest current bowl appearance streak at 17 games and is 7-9 in the last 16. Overall, the Hokies are 8-14 in bowl games.
