FCS Weekend Recap (UPDATED): Surging Elon Takes Down Richmond, Samford Upends Furman

It didn't take long for the upsets to begin in the FCS this past weekend. Penn did the honors on Friday night with a 23-17 win in double-overtime over Dartmouth to give the Quakers their first win over the Big Green since 2016. More importantly, the victory gives Penn its first 3-0 start since 2003.

That game set the stage for a litany of upsets on Saturday, led by Central Arkansas' 49-20 rout of visiting Austin Peay. The Governors entered the game as a 6.5-point favorite ad lost by 29 for a 35.5-point swing. Also, Austin Peay was 4-1 and ranked 9th in the Congrove Computer Rankings coming into this contest while Central Arkansas was 1-3 and ranked 73rd.

Among the upsets on Saturday was D2 Lane edging Tennessee State 28-27 on a 2-point conversion walk-off in overtime. TSU had won all 9 previous meetings dating back to 1916.

Stonehill, in its first season a FCS member, entertained Duquesne and knocked off the Dukes 24-20 as an 11-pointg underdog.

Meanwhile, North Dakota doused 5.5-point road favorite Missouri State 48-31 Cornell was a 34-31 winner at Colgate, Samford took a 34-27 road win at Furman, and Northwestern State scored a 36-33 home upset of 7.5-point favorite Nicholls State, and

Twelve teams had a bye week, including 2nd-ranked Jackson State and 5th-ranked Weber State.

Among the highly-ranked teams that saw action, No. 1 Montana managed a 28-20 win at Idaho State after being favored by 33.

No. 3 North Dakota State was a 27-14 winner in the FargoDome over Youngstown State, and No. 4 South Dakota State 34-10 victor at home over Western Illinois.

6th-ranked Sacramento State took care of its business with a 49-21 win at Cal Poly, and No. 7 Montana State thumped UC Davis 41-24 in Bozeman.

Meanwhile, 8th-ranked Holy Cross was a 30-21 winner at Harvard, and No. 10 Delaware scored a 24-10 victory at Towson.

A little further down the rankings, 18th-ranked Furman fell 34-27 at home to No. 21 Samford, while 16th-ranked Richmond lost 30-27 in double-overtime to No. 27 Elon.

FCS vs. FBS

There will be 118 FBS vs. FCS matchups this season with App State, Army and Marshall each playing two such games, and 115 other FBS schools playing one apiece.

There were six FBS-FCS games this week. The FBS was 6-0 with the sixth being played on Sunday as Florida thunmped Eastern Washington 52-17. The other five games saw South Carolina crush South Carolina State 50-10, Appalachian State blank The Citadel 49-0, Marshall down Gardner-Webb 28-7, Syracuse shut out Wagner 59-0, and Western Michigan defeat New Hampshire 44-7.

After Sunday's game, only 8 FBS-FCS matchups games will remain for the rest of the season. The FBS is 101-8 vs. the FCS this year, and 1,675-148 (.919) since we began tracking this in 2003.
