FCS Weekend Recap - Southern Wins SWAC West; 2nd Round Matchups Set for Playoffs

Southern, a 35-0 loser at Jackson State in the regular season on October 29, will get a second crack at the Tigers when the teams meet in the SWAC Championship game at Jackson next Saturday. Meanwhile, Arkansas-Pine Bluff got he upset win in the Turkey Day Classic, and all of the 2nd-round games are now set in the FCS Playoffs.

The Jaguars clinched the (7-5, 5-3) won the west division title with a 34-17 win over Grambling State in the Bayou Classic. Jackson State (11-0, 8-0) will represent the east division and try to capture a second straight conference championship. After also running the table in 2021, the Tigers defeated Prairie View 27-10, but then fell 31-10 to South Carolina State in the Celebration Bowl.

Southern last played for all the marbles in 2019 and lost to Alcorn State. The Jaguars last won the championship in 1998, the year before the league split into two divisions.

MEAC champion North Carolina Central will face the SWAC Champion in this season's Celebration Bowl on December 17 in Atlanta.

The annual Turkey Day Classic saw 17.5-point underdog Arkansas-Pine Bluff upset Alabama State 19-14.

As for the FCS Playoff games on Saturday, one of the best was saved for last as Montana rallied form a 24-3 deficit by scoring 31 unanswered points and eliminated visiting SEMO 34-24. The Griz will move on to face No. 3 seed North Dakota State.

Idaho missed a 39-yard field goal with 6 seconds left and SE Louisiana held on for a wild 45-42 win in Hammond. The Lions take a 6-game winning streak to 6-seed Samford next week.

Gardner-Webb cashed its first-ever FCS playoff game into a round two opportunity with a 52-41 win at Eastern Kentucky. The Runnin' Bulldogs resembled their nickname as they rushed for 405 yards led by Naree Gaither's 245. Gaither ran for 136 yards and both of his touchdowns in the first quarter. Gardner-Webb will now make the trek from Boiling Springs, North Carolina to 5-seed William & Mary.

Meanwhile, Richmond will travel across country from Virginia to Sacramento State to face the 2-seed Hornets after blanking Davidson 41-0.

St. Francis was no match for the Blue Hens as Delaware bludgeoned the Red Flash 56-17. It was the second appearance in the playoffs for St. Francis, and the first since a 31-21 loss to Villanova in 2016. It's the 18th playoffs for Delaware which won the national championship in 2022 and lost in the title game in 2007 and 2010. The reward for the Fightin' Blue Hens is a trek to 1-seed South Dakota State.

Elon is still winless in four FCS Playoff appearances. This time, the Elon fell 31-6 at Furman which will head to San Antonio to face 7-seed Incarnate Word.

New Hampshire outscored Fordham 52-42 and the Wildcats will now travel just 100 miles to Worcester, Massachusetts to face 8-seed Holy Cross.

Weber State was a 38-31 winner over North Dakota and will now head to fellow Big Sky member and 4-seed Montana State which defeated the Wildcats 43-38 in Bozeman on October 22.

FCS vs. FBS

There were 119 FBS vs. FCS matchups this season with App State, Army and Marshall each playing two such games, and 116 other FBS schools playing one apiece.

The final FBS-FCS matchups yesterday saw Austin Peay lose 34-0 at Alabama, Utah Tech fall 52-26 at BYU, ETSU get smacked 56-7 at Mississippi State, and North Alabama get blanked 59-0 at Memphis.

The FBS was 111-8 (.933) vs. the FCS this year, and is 1,685-148 (.919) since we began tracking this in 2003.
