FCS Playoffs - Quarterfinals Recap - UIW Wins Highest Scoring Playoff Game in History

December 10, 2022 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

The quarterfinals weekend of the FCS playoffs are completed after a mixed bag of games on Friday night and a Saturday pull-away win by the No. 1 seed on Saturday

First on Friday night was No. 3 seed North Dakota State's methodical 27-9 win over 6-seed Samford in the FargoDome. The Bison were never threatened in their first-ever meeting with the Bulldogs as they led 24-0 before Samford finally got on the board with a field goal with 12:08 to play in the game.

The next game to finish was outside in below freezing Bozeman where the 4-seed Montana State Bobcats used the elements to their full advantage, icing 5-seed William & Mary 55-7.

Montana State will visit South Dakota State which pulled away in the second half for a 42-21 win over Holy Cross in Brookings. The Crusaders tied the game at 21 with 8:59 to play in the 3rd quarter, but SDSU scored the game's final 21 points, including a meaningless touchdown with 39 seconds left that pushed Montana State over the 19.5-point spread. It will be the 3rd straight semifinal appearance for the Jackrabbits and the fourth straight for the Bobcats in which they elected to play (opted out of 2020-2021 Covid season).

The night was topped off by the highest scoring game in FCS Playoffs history as 7-seed Incarnate Word scored last to win 66-63 at 2-seed Sacramento State. The Hornets fought back from 11-point deficits three times, twice using successful onside kicks to begin go-ahead drives. The last of those led to Sacramento State taking a 63-59 lead with 1:43 remaining. But Incarnate answered with 27 seconds left, then knocked down a Hail Mary pass in the end zone on the final play of the game to secure a trip to North Dakota State next weekend.

Sacramento State gained 738 yards on 109 plays, while UIW amassed 579 yards on 73 plays. Cardinals' QB Lindsey Scott threw for 219 and 4 TD's and ran for 166 and 2 scores.

UIW head coach G.J. Kinne will have to wait at least one more week to begin his next job as the head coach at Texas State. Sacramento State head coach Tory Taylor on Saturday was named the head coach at Stanford.

The Congrove Computer Rankings had each seeded home team favored to win by between 12 and 13 points, except for Sacramento State which the computer had as a scant 0.44-point underdog to Incarnate Word (UIW). Oddsmakers favored the Hornets by 6.5 when the line closed.
