October 6, 2019 by Dave Congrove

Florida got the huge 24-13 SEC win over Auburn in "The Swamp", and while Alabama and Clemson were idle, the other top teams played and won big.

Ohio State toppled Michigan State 34-10, LSU cruised to a 42-6 win over Utah State, Georgia blasted Tennessee 43-14, Oklahoma subdued Kansas 45-20, Wisconsin blanked Kent State 48-0, and Penn State routed Purdue 35-7.

Elsewhere, Michigan out-defensed Iowa 10-3, Oregon repelled Cal 17-7, and Notre Dame bowled over Bowling Green, 52-0.

The weekend was not without some upsets.

UCF was a 4.5-point Vegas favorite, but a 5.83-point computer underdog at Cincinnati, and the computer's pick prevailed as the Bearcats ended the Knight's 19-game American conference winning streak, 27-24. The computer also called Arizona's 35-30 upset win at Colorado.

Virginia Tech forced 5 turnovers in the first half - 4 in the first quarter - but wound up needing a game-winning TD with 1:03 left to play and two incomplete passes by Miami in the end zone in the last 10 seconds to upset Miami 42-35 after blowing a 28-0 lead.

Other upsets saw Stanford get a much-needed win with a 23-13 victory over Washington, Texas Tech down Oklahoma State 45-35, Pitt edge Duke 33-30, and Oregon State defeat UCLA 48-31.

Navy fired the first salvo in the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy competition between the three military academies after the Midshipmen staved off Air Force 34-25 at Annapolis.

Iowa and Auburn were the only schools to get knocked from the unbeaten ranks. Iowa fell 10-3 at Michigan, and Auburn lost 24-13 at Florida.

Baylor and SMU are among the 16 teams still undefeated. The Bears gained a 31-12 mild upset win at Kansas State, while the Mustangs rallied from 21-down at the end of the 3rd quarter to ultimately score a 43-37 triple-overtime win over visiting Tulsa.
