College Football Playoff Rankings - Week 5 - Michigan To No. 2, Ohio State Drops to 5th

November 29, 2022 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

The biggest changes in the fifth weekly rankings by the College Football Playoff Committee were the expected rise of Michigan and fall of Ohio State after the Wolverines left "The Shoe" with a 45-23 win on Saturday.

The big questions were how far would Michigan rise and would Ohio State fall from the top four. The answers supplied by the new rankings are that Michigan is still blocked from the top spot by reigning champion Georgia, and Ohio State now needs someone to lose in a conference championship game to rind its way back into the mix on Selection Sunday.

TCU was moved up to the 3rd.

USC cracked the top 4 after sitting at No. 6 a week ago, thanks to LSU's upset loss at Texas A&M that knocked the Bayou Bengals down from 5th to 14th.

Three teams dropped out of the top 25 - Ole Miss, Cincinnati and Louisville. They were replaced by South Carolina, Mississippi State and NC State.

The College Football Playoff matches the No. 1 ranked team vs. No. 4, and No. 2 vs. No. 3 in semifinal games that rotate annually among six bowl games – the Cotton, Fiesta, Peach, Orange Bowl, Sugar and Rose. This season's Playoff Semifinals will take place Saturday, December 31, 2022, at the Peach and Fiesta Bowls. The College Football Playoff National Championship will be Monday, January 9, 2023, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA.
