Defending Champs Ousted From Playoffs

Sam Houston State, the defending FCS champions and the No. 1 seed, were ousted from the playoffs on Saturday as Montana State invaded Huntsville and rode away with the 42-19 upset win. The Bearkats were 6-point favorites, and a 7.45-point computer pick to move on. but the Bobcats scored 28 points before the home team even got on the board with just 1:28 to go in the first half. The loss snapped a 22-game winning streak for SHSU.

Villanova, the 5 seed and playing at home, was also eliminated from the tournament as unseeded South Dakota State - last year's runner-up, dispatched the Wildcats 35-21. The Jackrabbits trailed 21-14 at the break, but scored 21 unanswered to rally for the win.

The only other Saturday game saw the No. 2 seed, North Dakota State, hold serve with a 27-3 win over East Tennessee State.

On Friday night, No. 3 seed James Madison cruised to a 28-6 win over Montana in Harrisonburg.

The first semifinal game will send JMU to North Dakota State to battle the Bison on Friday night at 9:15 eastern time. The other semifinal match has Montana State hosting the SDSU on Saturday at 2 p.m. eastern. Both games will air on ESPN2.

FCS vs. FBS

2 teams played 2 FCS teams this fall (UConn and UMass), and 115 teams played 1 FCS school for a total of 117 such matchups.

The FBS finishes the season is 105-12 vs. the FCS. Since we began tracking this in 2003, the FBS teams are 1,574-140 (.918).

Last year, 30 FBS teams played a total of just 34 games against FCS schools and the FCS won just 1 game (1-33). That honor also went to Jacksonville State with its 19-10 victory over FIU.
