Weekend Recap: Oregon Falls in Upset at Arizona State

Ohio State defeated Penn State 28-17 to clinch a third consecutive east division title in the Big Ten. Meanwhile, two-touchdown favorite Oregon was upset 31-28 at Arizona State.

Alabama and Auburn had tune-up wins over FCS teams as they prepare for the Iron Bowl rivalry game at Auburn on Saturday.

In other games involving top teams, LSU crushed Arkansas 56-20, and Georgia fended off Texas A&M 19-13. Clemson and Florida were idle.

FIU upset Miami (Fla.) 30-24. Going into that game, the Hurricanes were 3-0 vs. the Golden Panthers by a cumulative score of 89-26. The 'Canes were an 18.5-point Vegas favorite.

3-point road underdog Cal upset Stanford 24-20 on "The Farm" in the 114th edition of "The Big Game" to end a 9-game losing streak in the series

Cincinnati escaped Temple with a 15-13 win with the winning margin provided by a blocked PAT return for two points. The Bearcats had lost 4 straight in the series.

Colorado snapped a 9-game losing streak in its series with Washington with a 20-14 upset of the Huskies in Boulder.

Rice is on a 2-game winning streak after a 20-14 upset of North Texas, which we predicted in our Feature Picks. The Owls ended a 9-game losing streak with a 31-28 upset victory at MTSU last week.

Western Kentucky upset Southern Miss 28-10 at Hattiesburg.

Conference and Division Championship Races

Cincinnati, Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, Miami (Ohio), Boise State, Hawaii, Oregon, Appalachian State and Louisiana-Lafayette have clinched the division title in their respective conference. Baylor and Oklahoma have clinched spots in the Big 12 title game. Here's a look at how each conference and division race.

American East: Cincinnati has clinched its first division title since the conference began staging a playoff in 2015.

American West: Memphis and Navy are both 6-1 in the conference and Memphis owns the tie-breaker with its 35-27 win over the Midshipmen on September 26. Memphis hosts Cincinnati on Friday, and Navy visits Houston on Saturday.

ACC Atlantic: Clemson has clinched its 5th straight division title.

ACC Coastal: Virginia (5-2) and Virginia Tech (5-2) will play in Charlottesville on Friday in a de facto playoff game for he division title. The Cavaliers knocked off non-conference for Liberty 55-27, and the Hokies tallied a second straight shutout victory with the 28-0 home win over Pitt.

Big Ten East: Ohio State has clinched a third straight division title.

Big Ten West: Minnesota (10-1, 7-1) and Wisconsin (9-2, 6-2) will meet in Minneapolis on Saturday in a de facto playoff game for the division title. The Golden Gophers went to Evanston and downed Northwestern 38-22, and Wisconsin took care of business against Purdue with a 45-24 home win.

Big 12: Oklahoma and Baylor are both 7-1 and will meet in Arlington for the conference title game. The Sooners have been in all 3 title games since the conference resumed staging one in 2017. Baylor last won a piece of the title in 2014.

CUSA East: Marshall (7-4, 5-2) would have won the division with a win at Charlotte, but the Herd were upset 24-13 to drop a game behind FAU (8-3, 6-1). The Owls were 40-26 winners at UTSA. The Herd own the tie-breaker with their 36-31 win at FAU on October 18. Marshall hosts FIU this week while FAU hosts Southern Miss.

CUSA West: Louisiana Tech (8-3, 5-2), Southern Miss (7-4, 5-2) both lost on Saturday, but are still tied for the lead. The Bulldogs own the tie-breaker with their 45-30 win over the Eagles on October 19.

UAB (8-3, 5-2) moved back in to the picture with a the 20-14 upset of the Bulldogs in Birmingham, and Southern Miss bowed 28-10 at home to Western Kentucky (7-4, 5-2). The Hilltoppers can't win the division as they've already lost to both Louisiana Tech and USM.

MAC East: Miami has clinched its first division title since 2010.

MAC West: Central Michigan and Western Michigan are tied for the lead at 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The Broncos own the tie-breaker by virtue of having won the heads-up battle 31-15 on September 28. Western Michigan was the preseason pick to win the division, while Central Michigan was projected to go 1-11 overall and 0-8 in the MAC. The Chippewas were a unanimous pick by all of the major preseason magazines to finish last, or tied for last.

Both Central and Western were idle this week. Western can clinch with a win at Northern Illinois next Tuesday (11/26). Central will win the division if Western Michigan loses to the Huskies and the Chips win at home over Toledo next Friday (11/29).

MWC Mountain: Boise State (10-1, 7-0) clinched a third straight division title with a 56-21 blowout win at Utah State

MWC West:: The computer's Mountain West Season Preview had this to say: "The surprise in the computer's projections for 2019 is the expected success for Hawaii.... If everything plays out as predicted, San Diego State's visit in the final regular season conference game on November 23 would be for the West division title." 

Hawaii (8-4, 5-3) edged San Diego State (8-3, 5-3) 14-11 on Saturday.

PAC-12 North: Oregon has clinched the division for the first time since 2014, but the Ducks saw their Final Four hopes disappear in a 31-28 upset loss at Arizona State.

PAC-12 South: Utah (10-1, 7-1) leads USC (8-4, 7-2) and can clinch the division at home next week with a win over Colorado.

SEC East: Georgia long ago clinched its third consecutive division title.

SEC West: LSU clinched on Saturday with a 56-20 blowout of Arkansas.

Sun Belt: Appalachian State (10-1, 6-1) clinched the eastern half with a 35-13 win over Texas State while Georgia Southern lost 38-33 at Arkansas State. Louisiana (9-2, 6-1) clinched the western half with a 53-3 romp over Troy as the Ragin' Cajuns own the tie-breaker over Arkansas State (7-4, 5-2) which trails by 1 game with only 1 game left to play.

For the second straight year, Louisiana will travel to Boone, North Carolina to face Appalachian State in the Sun Belt championship game. The Mountaineers won last year's contest 30-19.

FBS vs. FCS

114 games this year pit FBS teams against FCS schools. That's two more than a season ago when FBS teams won 105 of 112 games.

Six FBS teams faced a FCS school this week and all six were victorious (Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Mississippi State, North Carolina and Vanderbilt).

Those games finish out the FBS-FCS matchups for 2019.

FBS teams were 111-3 (.974) for the season. Since we began tracking this in 2003, the FBS schools are 1,435-127 (.919).
