October 29, 2017 by FWAA-NFF

NOTE: CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove is among the voters.

SEC powerhouses Alabama and Georgia ranked 1-2 in the poll this week, with the Crimson Tide picking up 45 of a possible 48 first-place votes. The Bulldogs received the other three first-place votes. Alabama's margin between itself and the second-place team narrowed from 61 to 44 points.

Penn State and TCU both vacated their places in the top four teams with road losses at Ohio State and Iowa State, respectively. Big Ten teams Ohio State and unbeaten Wisconsin moved into slots No. 3 and No. 4. Penn State fell to seventh and TCU to 11th.

Notre Dame jumped from ninth to sixth with an impressive home victory over North Carolina State, which was one of three teams to drop out of the poll along with Washington State and USF after losses. Iowa State and UCF entered the poll for the first time this season. Auburn returned to the poll at No. 16.

The Big 12 led all conferences with four teams in the poll, followed by the ACC, Big Ten and SEC with three each. The Pac-12 and American had one each and Independents one.

Voters in the poll consist of FWAA writers and College Football Hall of Famers who were selected to create a balanced-geographical perspective.

Congrove's top 5 this week had Alabama No. 1, followed by Georgia, Miami (Fla.), Wsconsin and Ohio State.
