A competitive Sun Bowl game was competitive until the 4th quarter. That's when UCLA picked-off Virginia Tech backup quarterback Mark Leal twice and outscored the Hokies 28-2 en route to a 42-12 win in El Paso on New Year's Eve afternoon.

Virginia Tech backup quarterback Mark Leal was thrust into action when Logan Thomas was sat after a personal foul hit in the 2nd quarter. Leal threw 2 costly picks, one which was returned for a touchdown and another returned to the Tech 10, to get UCLA rolling.

UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley ran for 161 yards and 2 scores and threw for 226 and 2 more touchdowns, the last on a 59-yard bomb with under 6 minutes left to play and the game firmly in hand.

The Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com projected UCLA as a 6.38-point winner.
