Boise, Idaho - Utah State broken open a close game with a 28-point outburst in the fourth quarterback to sink Toledo 41-15 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl today.
Utah State led just 13-9 after a Kerwynn Williams led to a Toledo field goal with 7:28 left in the game. Williams spent the rest of the 4th quarter redeeming himself with touchdown runs of 63 yards, 5 yards and 25 yards to put the game away. The 63-yard score came on his first carry after the fumble.
Williams finished with 235 yards to push his season total 1,747 and his 3 touchdowns brought his season total to 18.
Toledo's only touchdown came on an 87-yard kickoff return by Bernard Reedy after Williams' last touchdown.
Utah State improved to 2-5 in bowl games with its first postseason win since 1993. In between were a pair of losses here in Boise. Last year, the Aggies were the victims of 1-yard run by quarterback Tyler Tettleton with 13 seconds left in a 24-23 loss to Ohio. In 1997, Utah State fell 35-19 to Cincinnati when this game was called the Humanitarian Bowl.
This was the first time Utah State played in consecutive bowl games since the 1960 and 1961 seasons.
Six of the previous eight bowl games played here had been decided on the last drive, with an average score of 31-24 over the past 15 Bowls.
The Aggies (11-2) came in as conference champs after going unbeaten (6-0) in a watered-down WAC that included a pair of teams in transition from the FCS (Texas State and UTSA). This was the last season that WAC football will exist as it became the biggest victim of conference realignment. Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii fled to the Mountain West after the 2011 season, following Boise State's defection after the 2010 campaign. Utah State and San Jose State will also join the Mountain West in 2013.
Toledo (9-4) tied for second place in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference with Ball State. All three losses came to bowl teams - Northern Illinois, Ball State, and Arizona. The Rockets went on an 8-game winning streak after opening with a narrow loss at Arizona (7-5). Then, after appearing in the BCS Standings for the first time in history at No. 25 on November 4, they dropped their next 2 games to Ball State (9-3) and Northern Illinois (12-1) and fell out of a spot in the MAC Championship.
Toledo is 8-5 "on the field" in bowl games, but was also later awarded a win in the 1984 California Bowl after UNLV was penalized for the use of ineligible players earlier in the season. In last season's Military Bowl in Washington, D.C., Air Force fumbled the ball out-of-bounds on an attempted 2-point conversion off a fake kick with 52 seconds left, giving Toledo a 42-41 win.
Utah State's conference-clinching 48-41 overtime win at Louisiana Tech on November 17 was the Aggies' first-ever victory over a ranked team on the road, as well as the first win over a ranked opponent in over 20 years.
The two Utah State losses came by a total of 5 points as the Aggies fell 16-14 at Wisconsin and 6-3 at BYU. After falling to the Cougars, Utah State finished the season on a 7-game winning streak.
The Congrove Computer Rankings had projected Utah State to win by 6.65 points.
