Vanderbilt Gets First Bowl Win Since 1955
by Mike Mitchell December 31, 2008
Boston College had its 8-game bowl winning streak snapped in a 16-14 loss to Vanderbilt at the Music City Bowl. It was Vandy's first bowl appearance since 1982 and first bowl win since 1955. The bowl victory also gave Vanderbilt a 7-6 record for its first winning season 1982.
Bryant Hahnfeldt's third field goal of the day was a 45-yarder with 3:26 remaining that proved to be the game winner. The only touchdown for the Commodores came on the recovery of a fumbled punt return when Sean Richardson fell on the loose ball in the end zone.
B.C. outgained Vanderbilt 331 to 200 and held the Commodores to 1-of-15 on third down conversions. Vanderbilt only had 8 first downs in the game. But the Commodores won the turnover battle 3-0, including two interceptions of Dominick Davis.
Davis had put his team in front 14-13 on a 55-yard connection with Colin Larmond with 7:46 to go in the game. The Commodores responded with the winning field goal march on the very next series.
The Eagles had two possessions afterward but went 3-and-out on the first effort, and were intercepted on the final try.
Boston College's last previous bowl loss was a 62-28 pounding by Colorado in the 1999 Insight Bowl. |
