Bulldogs Win Defensive Duel
by Mike Mitchell
December 29, 2007
Mississippi State edged Central Florida 10-3 as the Bulldogs held NCAA rushing leader Kevin Smith to 119 yards, leaving him just 61 yards short of breaking Barry Sanders' single-season record of 2,628 set in 1988 at Oklahoma State.
The defensive stand-off produced a game that was still knotted at 3-3 until Anthony Dixon scored on a 1-yard plunge with just 1:54 to go.
UCF had two second-half scoring opportunities end in missed field goals and its final possession managed just 4 yards before turning the ball over on downs.
The Golden Knights finished 10-4, while the Bulldogs went 8-5 for their first winning season in seven years.
UCF was playing in just its second bowl game in school history after moving up to the major level in 1996. The Golden Knights lost 49-48 in overtime to Nevada in the 2005 Hawai'l Bowl.
Mississippi State improved to 7-6 in bowl games with its third straight bowl win. |
