Beavers Use Ground Game To Squeak Past Terps

by Mike Mitchell
December 29, 2007

Oregon State used its rushing game to control the clock and methodically wear down Maryland in a 21-14 Emerald Bowl win, its 5th straight postseason victory. The loss ended the Terps' three-game bowl winning streak.

Senior running back Yvenson Bernard carried 38 times for 177 yards, and freshman James Rodgers added 115 yards, as the Beavers ran 23 more plays than Maryland.

The Beavers broke a 14-14 tie with 10 seconds left in the third quarter when Bernard fumbled the ball into the endzone and Rodgers recovered it.

Maryland's ensuing possession ended with a missed field goal from 31 yards out. After that, the Terps only had two more possessions and never penetrated beyond the Oregon State 43-yard line. The Beavers ran out the last 6:24 with a 14-play drive that started on their own 1-yard line and ended at the Maryland 8-yard line when time expired.

Oregon State finished its 2007 campaign with a 9-4 record. Maryland fell below .500 at 6-7.

The Terrapins were held to just 19 yards rushing, and 225 yards of total offense. Maryland took a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter, but never scored again.
