The 2010 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl will celebrate its 10th Anniversary on December 18th when the Troy University Trojans and the Ohio University Bobcats take to the field in the Louisiana Superdome.
Troy received the Sun Belt bid, even though it was co-champs with FIU and lost the heads-up meeting with the Golden Panthers. Executive Director of the New Orleans Bowl, Billy Ferrante, said, "The Sun Belt Conference gave us a lot of exciting football to end the season, and made our choice a tough one. Troy has an exciting, competitive, and enthusiastic history with the New Orleans Bowl, and we always look forward to welcoming the Trojan Nation," noted Ferrante.
Troy backed into its share of the conference title when FIU fell 28-27 to Middle Tennessee on the final weekend of play. The Golden Panthers wound up in Detroit where it will play Toledo in the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl in their first-ever bowl game.
The final weekend of regular season play also saw Troy head coach Larry Blakeney secure his 160th win as the Trojans defeated FAU 44-7.
This makes Troy's third New Orleans Bowl appearance where it is 1-1 against Conference USA opponents. 2010, however, will mark the MAC’s first appearance in this bowl game when the Ohio Bobcats come to town.
In his 7th year with Ohio, former Nebraska head coach Frank Solich guided the Bobcats to an 8-4 overall record and a 2nd-place finish in the MAC East. It is Ohio's third bowl appearance since the 2006 season after going bowl-less from 1969 through 2005. However, the Bobcats are 0-4 overall in bowl games and are one of just nine teams to have played in, but never won, a bowl game. Six of those nine teams are MAC schools.
The 10th Anniversary R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl will kickoff from the Louisiana Superdome at 9:00 pm ET on ESPN.
