Steve Spurrier is in his fourth season at South Carolina with a record of 28-21 (.571) and in his 19th season overall with a record of 170-61-2 (.734). The Gamecocks' offensive coordinator is Spurrier and Spurrier Jr. and the defensive coordinator is Ellis Johnson.
Kirk Ferentz is in his 10th season at Iowa with a record of 69-53 (.566) and in his 13th season overall with a record of 81-74 (.523). The Hawkeyes' offensive coordinator is Ken O'Keefe and Norm Parker serves as the defensive coordinator.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN SOUTH CAROLINA HAS THE BALL
The Gamecocks have started three different players at quarterback this season with Chris Smelley (9 starts, Stephen Garcia (2) and Tommy Beecher (1) each getting the call. South Carolina is one of only 12 Division I schools in the country that has started three quarterbacks this season. Garcia has been named the starting quarterback for the Gamecocks in the Outback Bowl. Kenny McKinley leads the SEC in receptions per game (5.33) and ranks fifth in receiving yards per game (61.8 yards per game). He earned honorable mention honors by the Associated Press this season. Mike Davis has carried 160 times for 571 yards, an average of 3.6 yards per carry. He has nearly 100 more carries than any other player on the squad, and has accounted for 48 percent of the rushing yards.
Mitch King was named Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year earlier this season. He was also chosen as a first team all-Big Ten player by both the media and coaches, including a unanimous selection by the coaches. King collected 52 tackles this season, including a team-best 15 1/2 for loss. King's 55 career tackles for loss are the second-most among active FBS players. Pat Angerer ranked third in Big Ten tackles (10.2) during conference play. His 16 tackles vs. Wisconsin ties Illinois LB Brit Miller for the most in a Big Ten game this season. Angerer leads the team with five interceptions.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN IOWA HAS THE BALL
Eric Norwood is second on the team with 66 tackles, including a team-high 13.5 TFL's, the fourth-highest mark in the SEC. He is also the SEC leader with 9.0 sacks after recording 7.0 sacks in the last four games, including a career-high 3.0 sacks vs. Arkansas. Emanuel Cook leads the team and is tied for ninth in the SEC with 87 tackles this season (7.2 per game). Cook earned second team all-conference honors by both the league's coaches and writers. Named one of 13 semifinalists for the Thorpe Award, he had a career-high 14 tackles in the win at Ole Miss. Stoney Woodson has a team-leading four interceptions this year, one more than senior Carlos Thomas, who splits time at that same cornerback position on the field.
Shonn Greene rushed for a school-record 1,729 yards on 278 carries with 17 touchdowns while leading the Hawkeyes to eight victories and five wins in their final six outings. He was named first team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association, Big Ten Conference most valuable player by the Chicago Tribune and the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. Greene is the first Iowa player to win the Doak Walker Award which was originally given in 1990. Jewel Hampton has scored seven rushing touchdowns. The seven rushing scores are believed to be an Iowa freshman record in a single-season.
Spencer Lanning has averaged 42.0 yards (sixth in the SEC) on 46 punts with a long of 53, set in the Arkansas game. Ryan Succop is 19-for-28 in field goal attempts this season, earning honorable mention All-SEC honors by the Associated Press. Both his field goal and field goal attempt totals lead the SEC. His 28 field goal attempts rank in a tie for second in the nation. Chris Culliver is averaging 24.4 yards per kickoff return, fourth in the SEC, including a long of 67 yards against Tennessee. Captain Munnerlyn had an 84-yard kick return at Kentucky and a 35-yard punt return against UAB.
Andy Brodell ranks third in the Big Ten and 27th nationally in punt return average (10.64). He has returned 36 punts this year, which ties Javier Arenas of Alabama for the most returns in the nation. He is one of only four Big Ten punt returners who have returned a punt for a score. Iowa punter Ryan Donahue, who is a finalist for the Ray Guy Award, has recorded at least one punt over 50 yards eight of the last 10 contests. Iowa opponents have returned only 11 punts for 55 yards this season.
This is the first meeting ever on the gridiron between these two flagship state institutions... The 2009 Outback Bowl will mark Carolina's 14th bowl appearance overall... The Gamecocks are 4-9 all-time in bowl games... They dropped their first eight bowl games, won three straight and now have split their last two bowl contests...
