No. 3 Virginia Tech and No. 8 Kansas collide in Miami, Fla., in this year’s FedEx Orange Bowl, held at Dolphins Stadium on Jan. 3. The 8 p.m. contest, which will be nationally televised by FOX, will be the first meeting between the two teams.
The Hokies are making their second appearance in the FedEx Orange Bowl and their 15th consecutive overall bowl appearance.
Kansas enters the contest with a 4-6
record in bowl games, while Tech owns a 7-13 mark.
The matchup will pitt the nation’s
second-ranked scoring offense (KU) against the second-ranked scoring defense (VT).
Virginia Tech corners Brandon Flowers and Victor “Macho” Harris, who each have recorded five interceptions in 2007, lead a unit that ranks fourth nationally in pass-efficiency defense against the nation’s 14th best pass offense.
Kansas senior Marcus Henry leads
the Jayhawks and ranks fifth in the Big 12 with a 82.8 receiving yards per game average.
The Hokie air attack features the senior quartet of Josh Morgan, Justin Harper, Josh Hyman and Eddie Royal. The four have combined to record 137 receptions for 1,917 yards and 14 TDs thus far in the 2007 season.
Kansas’ Todd Reesing (11) and Virginia
Tech’s Sean Glennon (21) both rank in the NCAA’s top 25 in passer efficiency.
Virginia Tech has not faced a team from the Big 12 since joining the ACC in 2004. The Hokies last matched up against a Big 12 foe in a bowl game was at the 1996 Orange Bowl, in which they faced Nebraska.
