BCS NEWS and NOTES

Dropped out of BCS Standings: No. 23 Oklahoma State

This is the 9th straight year that the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the AP poll will meet for the national championship. Prior to the BCS, the AP's No. 1 and 2 teams met in bowl games only 8 times in 56 seasons.

Notre Dame becomes the first independent school in BCS history to play for the national title.

This is the 7th straight year that at least 1 SEC team will compete in the title game, including three of the last four for the Crimson Tide.

Northern Illinois is the first team from the MAC to play in a BCS bowl game. It is the 9th conference to have a team represented in the BCS with only Conference USA and the soon-to-be defunct WAC missing out.

Northern Illinois is the 8th team from a conference without an annual automatic berth for its champion to play in a BCS bowl game in the past 9 years. In the 54 years before the BCS, only 5 teams that are currently members of CUSA, MAC, MWC, WAC and SB received a similar chances. (Wyoming '76 Fiesta, Air Force '71 Sugar, Wyoming '68 Sugar, Rice '61 Sugar, Rice '47 Orange).
