PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WINNERS

On August 29, 2013, the Louisville Sports Commission which over sees the award, announced two changes to the Paul Hornung Award, presented annually to the most versatile player in major college football. Starting in 2013, the winner will be selected in early December immediately following conference championships games and regular season play. Since its inception in 2010, selection of the Paul Hornung Award had taken place after the completion of the college football bowl games.

The Paul Hornung Award was created in January 2010 to recognize and reward versatile, high-level performers in major college football. In addition to starting or playing significant downs on offense or defense, candidates were measured by performance from among one or more of the following:

  • Playing multiple positions on offense and/or multiple positions on defense
  • Playing a significant role on special teams
  • Performing as a two-way player who starts either on offense or defense and is used on the other side of the ball in some impactful capacity
  • Making a significant impact during big games and elevating the team’s performance through leadership displayed by excelling in multiple roles

At Paul Hornung's recommendation, the award now is open to single-position players who demonstrate uncanny and versatile abilities on a consistent basis throughout the entire season.

Selection Criteria has been modified to the following:

  • * Play multiple positions on offense and/or multiple positions on defense
  • * Play a significant role on special teams
  • * Perform as a two-way player who starts either on offense or defense and is used on the other side of the ball in some impactful capacity
  • * Demonstrate an extreme, high-level of versatility at one position on a regular basis over the course of the season
  • * Make a significant impact during big games and elevate the team's performance through leadership displayed by excelling in multiple roles.
